{saving money on “the basics”}

If you follow my page on Facebook, chances are you saw this picture pop up last week.  Clearance MilkMake no mistake about it….I totally danced a jig in front of the refrigerated section at Kroger when I came across these gallons of milk for a whopping $0.99 each!!!

I’m often asked by those who know me how I’m able to save money on the basics (bread, milk, produce, toilet paper, etc.).  These are items that you rarely or never see coupons for.  So, what’s a couponing girl to do??

Watch for clearance tags, that’s what!!!

When I’m at my local Kroger store, I always check the produce and dairy sections in particular for clearance items.  If you’re lucky enough to come across yogurt, cheese, or milk that is on clearance you can snatch it up and then store it away in your freezer for at least another month or so!  Since my husband and my son both drink whole milk, this was a great find for me!

Occassionaly I’ll come across a clearance deal at Walmart.  But it’s rare.  I know some people find great deals at their Walmart locations….but mine doesn’t usually have much to offer.  I have a much better chance at scoring the really cheap prices at Kroger.

So, remember to check for clearance tags when you’re out shopping.  And if you’re lucky enough to have a coupon to match up to an already low price, you might just find yourself with a money-maker!  Whoo-hoo!!
