effective time management {day six}

For busy moms, time management is an area of extreme importance.  Because either you manage your time, or it manages you…..or something to that extent.  The reality is that if you fail to manage your time and responsibilities, things just don’t get done, am I right??

So, today I’m looking at my own time management skills and tweaking them where needed.  Somehow it seems that my “to-do” list doesn’t match up with the number of hours that I’ve been given to finish it.  But I’m pretty sure it’s the same for everyone and as much as I wish there were more hours in the day to get things accomplished, there just aren’t.  So, I have to decide what’s important to me and where I want to spend the bulk of my time.

Obviously feeding my family is going to be a top priority.  I’m not sure anyone in my house would let me get away with “skipping” a meal.  So, planning and preparing meals is definitely up there on the list of must dos.  And because we homeschool our kids, spending time teaching Monday-Friday is also a huge priority.  Other things like laundry, cleaning, running errands, and whatnot all have to be taken care of as well…..so I’d better be pretty good at figuring out my time.

I know that not everyone is a schedule-freak like me.  But having a clearly defined WRITTEN OUT plan is the only way I can make sure I get things done.  I have certain days of the week that I clean certain rooms in my home.  ***As a side note, I thought it important to point out that, of course, life happens to all of us and we have to have a little bit of wiggle room in our “schedule”.***  But as a general rule of thumb, I try to stick to my schedule.  And having 3 kiddos that are capable of helping out (no matter how small the task)  with the daily upkeep of our home is also a big help.  I would encourage anyone with kids to assign age-appropriate chores for their littles if you haven’t already.  It’s a huge help.  The hardest part of this, for me, is remembering that having the towels folded or the floor swept is good enough, even if it isn’t done “my way”.

I know that the Lord loves me regardless of how clean my home is or how perfectly (there’s that word again) my day flows according to my schedule ~ but I also know that the Lord expects us to be good stewards of the possessions that he has blessed us with.  And keeping our homes clean and organized is one way that we can make sure we are valuing our possessions.

I also believe that our time is one of the “things” that the Lord expects us to treat with respect.  Sure, we would all love to curl up on the couch for three hours every night catching up on our favorite TV shows, but that isn’t a good use of our time and we all know it.  The occasional TV splurge is okay….but I try not to make a habit of it.  And please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not judging anyone else.  Perhaps your favorite way to relax is to lose yourself within the script of your favorite drama…and that’s fine.  We all have to unwind in ways that work for us.  My favorite way to end the day is in my comfortable chair with a cup of yummy coffee and a good book, followed with reading my bible.  That, to me, is the ultimate way to relax.  But quite honestly, I have a hard time relaxing when there are dishes in the sink and laundry in the washer/dryer and I know that I didn’t accomplish my chores for the day.

So, I guess the point of my rant today is to encourage everyone to take a look at how you utilize the 24 hours that you have given to you on a daily basis.  Are you using your time in a way that helps you to feel like a better person??  Are there areas where you feel that you could improve in this area??  If you’re anything like me, there’s always room for improvement.

Today I’m making an effort to be more intentional with my time and what activities I choose to give myself to while here in our temporary home.
