“Mom, what’s for dinner?”
Growing up in our house, speaking these four words was the fastest way to send my mother into a complete spiral meltdown. After working all day, the last thing she wanted to do was to come home and try to figure out what to feed our family. Back then, I didn’t really understand what the big deal was or why she got so upset.
Fast forward 20 years and three children and things start to become a little more clear.
If you’re a busy mom…and let’s face it, we all are…..you’ve probably found yourself at one point in time trying to come up with dinner at that 5:00 hour. This is quite possibly the fastest way to ruin a mom’s night because not only are you tired from working or keeping up with kiddos all day, but now these same kiddos (and sometimes husband) all dare to ask the dreaded question. “Mom, what’s for dinner”.
One of my go-to tactics for avoiding this question is quite simple really. It’s called meal planning. You may have heard of it. 😉
And one of the ways I have found to save the most time and money when it comes to meal planning is freezer cooking. You may be someone who has the luxury of spending an entire weekend day prepping 40 meals for your family, you may not be. You might be the type to simply double or triple a recipe that you’re already preparing one evening and then throwing the “extra” in the freezer for another night. To be honest, I’ve done it both ways. And I can’t say that I really prefer one method over the other. It’s just whatever works best for you and whatever time constraints you are working with.
The basic concept of freezer cooking is to make several meals that have similar ingredients in order to save you time (chopping, prepping) and money (think buying in bulk). There are thousands of great freezer cooking recipes available online and even dozens of blogs dedicated solelyto creating even more delicious recipes. Here are a few of my favorite blogs to consult when I’m planning a cooking day.
